Life-changing postgraduate studies in finance
‘Life-changing’ is how Master of Applied Finance alumnus Adriana Ontiveros Hernandez would describe her time at the University of Newcastle.
After completing a Bachelor of Economics in Spain and diving straight into the industry, it wasn’t long before Adriana found she wasn’t fully satisfied with her professional life. She felt there was more to learn, more to study and more to her career – she was right.
Her journey led her to the University of Newcastle.
“I was looking for a change that could open new doors and opportunities to me. After thinking about what a fulfilling, professional career looked like for me, I decided finance was what I wanted to do.
“The University of Newcastle’s program offered a very diverse skillset. Instead of being just focused on a particular financial field, it’s built to give you the chance to explore different financial arenas from pure accounting to derivatives and other market financial instruments.
“This comprehensive studying profile appealed to me. I thought it would be a great challenge and would provide me the opportunity to explore and build on a very diverse financial background,” Adriana said.
As an international student, Adriana wanted to make sure the university she chose could provide her the best experience possible – across learning and lifestyle.
“I chose the University of Newcastle because of its focus on international inclusion and the fact that it gives overseas students the necessary tools to succeed in their studies.
“They also offer mentoring programs and social events to international students which helps you expand your networks and at the end of the day you get to meet interesting people and make new friends,” Adriana said.
So where have Adriana’s studies taken her? All over the world.
“I’m now working in investment banking for an international banking corporation in Portugal. I’ve had the chance to travel all over Europe because of my job, it’s exactly what I was looking for.
“I love my work and it wouldn’t have been possible without the skillset I acquired studying at the University of Newcastle,” Adriana said.
