PREP9200 - Mathematics for Engineering
The mathematical description of any dynamic process requires the use of calculus, the mathematics of rate of change. Engineering aims to study and control dynamical processes. Fluids oozing, heat conducting, electricity flowing, bionic arms pumping: all of these are described mathematically via calculus.
In this course we apply the calculus you learned at school to some simple engineering problems. The aim is to show that far from being a boring and useless waste of time, calculus is one of the pinnacles of mankind's achievement, giving us the power to understand, and therefore control, our natural environment.
This course assumes knowledge of calculus equivalent to 2 Unit HSC Mathematics and is an essential introduction to your engineering studies at the University of Newcastle.
Please note: this course is not available mid year.
This course will not be offered in the UON PREP Winter Program.
