The School of Architecture and Built Environment hosts an annual a Design Day with studio activities for visiting students from some local high schools.
Current the University of Newcastle students guide them through the Architecture and Industrial Design activities and show them around the Design Studio.
For the Industrial Design Activity, students are tasked with creating a compact sound amplifier from paper to work with their smartphone. After each team busily test their creations, a winner is chosen by measuring how much the music volume had increased with their design.
The Architecture activity has the students create a habitat for an animal of their choice from cling wrap and string. The groups have to then guess what each of the animals were, correct answers are of course rewarded with lollies.
