How do you combine deep research with commercial know-how and then use that advantage to promote a startup community in Newcastle? As Gunilla and Darren Burrowes will tell you, it is no mean feat but one which delivers satisfaction in spades. They’ve worked together since 2000 and in 2015 the BlueZone Group was formed to leverage the synergy of companies operating in diverse markets that shared a common focus on underwater technology, harsh environments and customers with demanding requirements.
BlueZone draws on Gunilla’s PhD in Underwater Communication Networks and Darren’s time as a Weapons Engineer in the Royal Australian Navy plus experience in start-ups and growing technology-based companies. The focus of the BlueZone Group is the application of world-leading technology to enable operations, science, maintenance and repair to be conducted in underwater or water-based environments.
In addition their BlueZone commitments, Gunilla and Darren have played an active role in promoting STEM, startups and gender diversity in science careers in the Hunter region and beyond which has seen the Burrowes take on establishing the Eighteen04 cleantech incubator and additional governance roles on company boards and not-for-profit organisations.
Join us for another insightful Startup Story at Three76 Hub and hear from Darren about how Blue Zone Group and Eighteen04 are taking Newcastle Tech to the world. Bring your lunch, learn and share.
About Startup Stories
Startup Stories takes place every Thursday from 1pm at University of Newcastle's coworking space Three76 Hub on Hunter Street. Over BYO lunch, a startup founder talks candidly about their experience as an entrepreneur and business owner – the highs, the lows, the wins, the mistakes, the whole enchilada. Startup Stories provides real-life examples of the different stages of the startup journey, creating a forum for startups to share and learn but also for the community to see tangible evidence of entrepreneurship making a difference in our region.
UON is proud to be able to bring this event to you via the NSW State Government's Boosting Business Innovation Program funding.
