Everyone knows that digital and tech-based enterprises can grow fast and furiously but it can be a different story for biopharma startups. In addition to the lengthy process of conducting clinical trials there’s a bunch of regulations and compliance matters to deal with. It’s a long game which requires persistence and determination. For this week’s Startup Story, presented as part of SparkFest, Three76 Hub is delighted to bring you Darren Shafren, Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle and Founder of Viralytics.
In 1999 Darren’s research efforts established that the common cold virus could be used as a potential treatment for cancer cells – a discovery that saw him with the HMRI Young Researcher of the Year and the confidence to found Viralytics Ltd. Over the past fifteen years his team has focused on developing the anti-cancer therapy, CAVATAK, which is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials for treatment of melanoma, prostate, lung and bladder cancers. Viralytics is now listed on the stock exchange and in 2014 secured $23 million through leading US- and UK-based specialist healthcare institutional investors and raised $4m through a special share offer. Come along and hear about what is next for this leading researcher and entrepreneur.
About Startup Stories
Startup Stories takes place every Thursday at University of Newcastle's coworking space Three76 Hub on Hunter Street. Over BYO lunch, a startup founder talks candidly about their experience as an entrepreneur and business owner – the highs, the lows, the wins, the mistakes, the whole enchilada. Startup Stories provides real-life examples of the different stages of the startup journey, creating a forum for startups to share and learn but also for the community to see tangible evidence of entrepreneurship making a difference in our region.
Spark Fest - A Celebration of Australian Startups.
Spark Festival is an annual program of events and activities focussing on startups, innovation and entrepreneurship. Meetups, mixers and socials. Hackathons, create-a-thons and workshops.
