HEaPS is a quarterly seminar series that serves as a platform for HCRA associated Early Career and High Degree Research students (HDR) to present their work, gain critical feedback and to network with each other.
This session is aligned to the Biomarkers and Targeted Therapies Flagship. Attending this HEaPS seminar is compulsory for those within this Flagship who have received direct research funding from HCRA. Please support this important networking and capacity building initiative.

Associate Professor Joanne Bowen, is Head of the Cancer Treatment Toxicities Group, Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide, which focuses on mechanisms and management of cancer therapy-induced gastrointestinal injury.
A/Prof Bowen graduated with a PhD in Medicine from the University of Adelaide in 2006, with her thesis investigating the molecular control of chemotherapy-induced cell death in intestinal epithelium. A/Prof Bowen was then awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council Biomedical Training Fellowship (2009 – 2012) to conduct research focused on discovery of peripheral blood mRNA expression profiles associated with risk of severe toxicity during treatment for oesophageal cancer. Her other educational achievements include B.HlthSc (Honours), GCert. Public Health, MPhil (Clinical Science), and GCert. Online Learning (Higher Education).
In 2011, she was appointed as a Lecturer in Physiology, University of Adelaide, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014 and promoted again in 2016 to Associate Professor. A/Prof Bowen is Deputy Associate Dean Gender Equity and Diversity, Faculty of Health Sciences and Program Coordinator for the Honours Degree (Adelaide Medical School). As a passionate academic, she provides training to the next generation of medical researchers in her laboratory, and supports development of higher degree research students across the School as a Postgraduate Coordinator.
A/Prof Bowen is an author on 98 peer-reviewed research publications and 7 book chapters all in the area of supportive cancer care. She was the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Mucositis Study Group Co-Chair from 2009 to 2015, and during this time was a co-organiser of the update of the MASCC/ISOO clinical practice guidelines for the management of mucositis secondary to cancer therapy. In 2016 she received a Telstra Business Women’s Award for public sector and academia and advocates for enhancing opportunities for women in STEMM Careers.
The HEaPS seminar series is an important platform for HDR students and ECRs to present their work and gain feedback in a supportive, encouraging environment.
