40 Years of Medicine Lecture Series - Keynote by Dr Nikki Stamp

This event was held on Wednesday 5 September 2018

Nikki Stamp

Dr Nikki Stamp is a one of only a handful for female cardiothoracic surgeons in Australia, and a mentor and supporter of women in surgery and of women in all careers. In Australia, USA and the UK, only around 10% of surgeons are female despite now over half of medical graduates being women. Dr Stamp is a participant of the #ILookLikeASurgeon social media campaign, which is a movement based on the idea that ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’, and geared towards providing visible gender role models and showing women everywhere that gender is not an obstacle to achieving your career.

In her keynote lecture, entitled 'I Look Like a Surgeon', Dr Stamp explored issues of gender equity in the medical work force, including in her own specialisation of surgery. She also discussed what needs to be done to address the under representation of women in these fields.

Celebrating 40 Years

2018 marks the 40th anniversary of medicine at UON, and the 10th anniversary of the Joint Medical Program. As part of the anniversary celebrations, we held an equity in medicine public lecture series, which consisted of key note lectures throughout the year addressing issues such as gender equity in the health and medical profession; service provision in rural and remote communities; and Indigenous health and well-being.
