ACE Forum: New Approaches to Medical Education

This event was held on Wednesday 9 May 2018

Join us for the first ACE Forum for 2018, discussing new approaches to medical education.

Professor Carol Miles, Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning will present: “Blended and active learning: a natural progression for Medical Education”

This presentation will demonstrate evolving strategies of blended and active learning, specifically leveraging technology, in the university classroom.  Specific focus will be placed on how both students’ and academics’ approaches to learning and teaching must change to assure success in this quickly changing mode of learning. Comparisons will be drawn between blended learning approaches and problem-based learning, with the assertion that both faculty and students in medical and allied health schools may be more prepared to dive into the challenges of blended learning than those in other disciplines.

Dr Tim Walker, Clinical Dean, Calvary Mater Newcastle will present: “An Introduction to Team Based Learning”

Educational research has shown lectures and didactic tutorials are not a great way of helping learners retain information; yet it can be very hard to conceive of alternatives, especially for busy clinicians. Group tasks, which engage students more in the learning process, promote greater retention of material studied; but we’ve all been frustrated by inefficient groups, where too much of the group time is spent sharing out the work. The internet and online learning materials could revolutionise how we teach; but how can we best leverage these resources to complement face-to-face time with learners?
