Building Resilience Seminar

This event was held on Thursday 5 March 2015

Resilience studies are burgeoning in a number of disciplines, and this seminar will be of interest to scholars in Health and Safety, Medicine, Business, Engineering, Social Work, Computer Science, Statistics, Construction and Policy Studies.

There will be presentations from a roster high calibre speakers from China, Taiwan, Belfast and Australia at this exciting event.

The event promises to be intellectually stimulating, and a great chance to meet Resilience professionals from various disciplines.

'Understanding collective behavior in crisis using system dynamics'

Professor Zhangang Han's research background includes systems dynamics and agent-based modelling, specializing in collective behaviour, Artificial Intelligence and social economic systems. He has an expertise in decision-making support systems and has engaged in international research cooperation with global climate forum. He has been awarded over 2.5 million RMB in competitive research funding and has published extensively in prestigious journals. He is the founder and has been the director of System Analysis Laboratory, BNU since 2001.

'A Framework for Integrated Risk Governance'

Professor Qian Ye's research background includes an expertise in social-economic impacts of climate changes and disaster risk governance. As the executive director of the Integrated Risk Governance Project, sponsored by Future Earth/ICSU and UNISDR, he has engaged extensively with the scientific research community, government policy makers, business sectors, educators and general public around the world on the disaster risk reduction and green development, supervising two current doctoral projects in co-benefit of reducing disaster risks and building resilient society. He has been awarded over $3 million USD in competitive research funding and has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in the area of climate change and disaster risk governance. He is the coordinator of Global University Consortium for Integrated Risk Governance, an international education network.

'Housing reconstruction after two major disasters in Taiwan: the challenge for resilience'

Dr. Jie-Ying Wu is current an Associate Professor and director of Dept. of Urban Planning and Disaster Management at Ming-Chuan University. He has more than 10 years of experience in the field of disaster management and urban planning, during which time he has conducted inter-discipline research on the dialogue between planning and disaster management professional fields. In addition, he has had extensive experience in providing technical assistance to government agencies, and private corporations in development of local disaster management plans, disaster recovery plan and hazards mitigation plan. Dr. Wu also works as a peer reviewer for more than 10 academic journals.

'Building Information Modelling for building resilience in small and medium architectural firms'

Ken Geary is responsible for the implementation of Building Information Modelling throughout the practice. He is currently lead architect for several highly serviced scientific buildings incorporating low carbon technology to achieve BREEAM Excellent rating. Ken places equal importance on the creation of attractive buildings and the delivery of functional performance through professional project management. He has extensive experience in the role of lead consultant working collaboratively within an integrated team to deliver sustainable design solutions. Ken is a collaborator on a BIM research initiative with the University of Newcastle, funded by the 'Connecting Australian European Science and Innovation Excellence/Priming Grants' (CAESIE).

'Psychosocial resilience to disasters; an Australian Red Cross approach'

Jessie is the Australian Red Cross Recovery Coordinator for NSW and ACT. She has substantial experience in emergency management focusing on preparedness and recovery with experience working in both Australia and Bangladesh. Most recently she has been managing the Red Cross Recovery Program in the Blue Mountains. She coordinated the Building Resilience Workshop Project, bringing together community services providers across a range of sectors to increase their capacity to prepare clients for the impacts of disasters; this project was recipient of the Resilient Australian Awards at both the state and National level. She holds a Master of Policy Studies from the University of New South Wales.
