NewMac Conference 2016

This event was held on Wednesday 7 December 2016

The theme of this year’s NewMac Humanities Postgraduate Conference is CONSTELLATIONS

CONSTELLATIONS(n).

  1. A group of stars forming a recognisable pattern;
  2. Group(s) of associated or interconnected people or things.

This year we invite our rising stars in postgraduate research to consider where have we come from and where are we going? How can we best connect and build bridges between researchers and across theoretically diverse disciplines? Scholars of the humanities operate within and across very broad arenas— CONSTELLATIONS—that at first glance may seem unconnected. We argue  that there is much to gain from interdisciplinary mobility and debate. That’s what NewMac 2016 will nurture.

CONSTELLATIONS aims to provide the conduits for and facilitation of the dissemination and circulation of information. Full of beauty, mystery, poetry, and awe, CONSTELLATIONS are also dynamic (non-lineal) and unbounded, spiralling outwards to create new networks and communities of researchers, and connecting with broad audiences. CONSTELLATIONS may also converge or diverge, but at the same time, are open to bringing in new ideas and ways of thinking, of conceptualising and theorising about the broader world in which we live, and of adapting to new technologies and social, historical, and cultural change. These CONSTELLATIONS, networks or assemblages, both virtual and real, are the theme of this year’s conference.

How does the notion of CONSTELLATIONS relate to the humanities and social sciences? How will future research operate in the academic and professional milieux of mobility and interdisciplinary exchange? How can we be better equipped to explore knowledge in the digital age? And from within our own disciplines, how can we reach out to other paradigms and methodologies to enhance our own areas? These ideas will underpin the NewMac 2016 CONSTELLATIONS conference.

Join us for one day of CONSTELLATIONS in Newcastle city centre. NewMac 2016 will be held on Wednesday 7 December 9am – 5pm at University House, Auckland St, Newcastle, nestled among some of Newy’s great coffee houses and bars and beside Civic Park.
