Humanities Startups: A Workshop

This event was held on Thursday 27 October 2016

Do you have the next big idea?

Humanities Startups - starting small but thinking big about the humanities in the 21st Century.

A 2 day workshop for humanities students, graduates and researchers to be held at UON's new Innovation Hub where participants will be able to immerse themselves in a contemporary, collaborative space.

This workshop will introduce participants to the fascinating world of the startup. Participants will need to bring along their own laptop

The mobile revolution and the ubiquity of the internet are creating opportunities for new enterprises in every sphere of life, in community services as well as business, in managing the physical world as well as in providing education, information and entertainment. The humanities, with their special understanding of history and language, and of the cultural and imaginative dimensions of life, offer an intriguing source of inspiration for these new enterprises.

Over two days, with the help of industry experts and a little instruction in coding, participants will nurture ideas into projects. Some will go away with support to move to the next stage but attendees are guaranteed to leave with something new to think about and with vital information about the practicalities and possibilities of the startup world.

Day One begins with a short coding course, followed by a panel discussion with current startup members and IT specialists, and concludes with a facilitated brainstorming session to finish. Day Two (finishing after lunch) will start with team and / or  individual pitches to a judging panel, followed by discussion of the pitches, and an announcement about further support for the ideas judged to be the most viable.

Note: Day 1 9:00am - 5:00pm  / Day 2 9:00am - 3pm

This is a free event. Catering included.

Please remember to BYO laptop.
