Smaller & Smarter Cities

The Smaller & Smarter Cities: International Symposium 2019 is Australia’s premier forum for addressing the opportunities and challenges facing major, non-capital cities here and abroad.

With increasing pressure on capital cities, governments across the world are looking for new ways to stimulate and leverage the economic and social contribution of regions and their cities.

The 2019 Smaller & Smarter Cities: International Symposium provides a forum for debate, discussion and analysis. The focus is on building socio-economic diversification and resilience.

The program comprises 30 international, national and local speakers across approximately 20 sessions sharing best practice on the challenges, trends and emerging opportunities in the sustainable and inclusive development of smaller cities.

Speakers and panellists are real-world practitioners in business, planning, management, consultancy and government.

Keynote speakers:

  • Nigel Jacob, co-Founder of the Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics
  • Ellie Cosgrave, co-Director, Urban Innovation and Policy Lab, University College London
  • Stefan Hajkowicz, Senior Principal  Scientist, CSIRO's Data61
