Helen Maslen Scholarships

The Helen Maslen Scholarship, generously established by Newcastle community member Helen Maslen, will empower and change the lives of survivors of domestic violence through education.

Research has shown that the impacts of domestic violence can be far reaching and long lasting. It also demonstrates that significant recovery can occur when the survivor has access to social, educational or financial support. Accessing higher education can be part of an important sense of strength and empowerment towards the survival process.

Motivated by her own experiences, Helen generously donated funds to set up a scholarship to help other domestic violence survivors create a new life for themselves and their children by supporting them in their education goals. Helen generously donated $25,000 to support five scholarships for survivors of domestic violence, providing them with funds to assist with living and studying costs.

“Being able to study at University could be an important part of the survival and healing process, and we are so grateful to Helen for providing this opportunity through the scholarship.”
Professor Penny Jane Burke, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education and Global Innovation Chair of Equity.

The Helen Maslen Scholarship (PDF, 100KB) is being supported by other generous community members who understand the life-changing power of education and the need to assist those who face significant challenges to access it. 100% of donations to the Helen Maslen Scholarship go directly to support students facing hardship as a result of domestic violence, unleashing their potential and shaping a brighter future for them and their families.
