Description

The Master of Exercise Physiology is for students who have completed an AQF level 7 Bachelor (or higher), or equivalent, degree in exercise and sport science who wish to pursue a career as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). The Master of Exercise Physiology is an advanced professionally orientated degree program which has been designed to meet the required Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) professional standards whilst including exciting course offerings reflecting current and emerging areas of exercise physiology practice. Graduates of the program can expect to occupy specialised roles in integrated health practice where exercise interventions are used as part of the management of disease, injury, and dysfunction. Throughout this program you will learn from experienced clinicians and researchers, developing skills in critical thinking and reflective practice in pathophysiology as well as medical management of disease enabling prescription and delivery of exercise within diverse health care settings. Student focused learning is provided through a balance of flexible and engaging electronic learning with face to face clinical problem-solving experiences combined with placement opportunities in an expansive and supportive clinical network.

Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

  • Knowledge and capacity to practise according to the ESSA Scope of Practice for AEPs and the ESSA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice.
  • Awareness and understanding of national, state and other compensable schemes and legislation related to AEP practice.
  • Well-developed communication skills for engaging with clients, parents, carers and significant others, accounting for sociocultural and individual factors.
  • Well-developed cognitive and creative skills to teach, coach and motivate clients to facilitate self-management of exercise and healthy lifestyle, using models of behaviour change, scientific evidence and clinical reasoning, and accounting for sociocultural and individual factors.
  • Broad and coherent knowledge and well developed cognitive and technical skills to monitor, recognise, analyse, interpret, report and take appropriate action regarding adverse signs and symptoms that may arise during exercise and/or recovery.
  • Well-developed cognitive and technical skills to select, design or modify and then analyse, interpret and apply assessment protocols and methodologies appropriate to the client and situation for acute, sub-acute and chronic disease and injury management, workplace health and rehabilitation and other clinical exercise services.
  • Well-developed cognitive and technical skills to design, implement and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions, based on referral information, presenting pathologies and co-morbidities, clinical reasoning, pre-intervention assessments and the analysis, interpretation and application of scientific evidence.
  • Broad and coherent knowledge and understanding of interactions between AEP target conditions, their treatments and the effects of exercise interventions in managing chronic and complex clinical presentations.
  • Broad and coherent knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiological bases of AEP target conditions, and the associated medical, surgical and other allied health treatment modalities and interventions for these conditions.
  • Commitment to professional self-development in the field of clinical exercise through engaging in educational and ongoing learning, self-evaluation of practice, building inter-professional working relationships and supporting new graduates.
  • Well-developed communication skills for engaging with other health professionals and engaging in inter-professional collaboration, including the ability to prepare written reports as required by compensable schemes.

Admission information

Admission requirements

Prior completion of an AQF7 Bachelor degree (or higher), or equivalent, in exercise and sport science that is accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA)*

*If you have completed a non-ESSA accredited Bachelor degree in/or related to the field of exercise and sports science, you will also require a successful Graduate Entry Assessment from Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Students that have completed the Graduate Diploma in Exercise and Chronic Disease Management will not be allowed entry into the Master of Exercise Physiology unless they can demonstrate a successful Graduate Entry Assessment from Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Compulsory program requirements

Three professional practicum courses will be completed in this program. 

As well as placements in the Central Coast, it is expected that you will be available to attend out of area placement locations. Travel and/or relocation will be at the student’s own expense.

Program duration

2 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 6 years maximum.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. International students requiring enrolment advice should review the program plan corresponding to the semester and year of commencement and can contact their Program Advisor at ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au

Additional information

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
