Description
The Master of Education is intended for Teachers who wish to retrain in an additional teaching area or gain further professional learning.
Teacher Retraining is provided in the areas of:
- Mathematics;
- TESOL
Professional Learning is available in
- Advanced Studies in Education
International onshore students can only enrol in the following specialisations:
- Advanced Studies in Education
- TESOL
Our retraining specialisations are structured according to the Subject Content Knowledge Requirements Policy of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA). Some courses within these specialisations may count as professional development to maintain Proficient Teacher status for Standards 1, 2, and 3. Please contact the program convenor for specific details of the courses that count as professional development with NESA.
Applicants living in New South Wales seeking to use a retraining specialisation to add an additional teaching qualification to their portfolio must already hold an accredited teaching degree and must be registered as a teacher with NESA. For recognition in other states, territories and countries, graduates should contact the regulatory authority in the relevant jurisdiction to determine the specific requirements for recognition as a teacher in that area.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:

Admission information
Admission requirements
The Master of Education is an 80-unit postgraduate qualification for:
- qualified teachers who wish to gain an additional teaching area in Mathematics or TESOL; or
- qualified teachers who wish to undertake professional development.
Admission is available for applicants who have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:
Teacher Retraining
- Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Education/Teaching; or
- Bachelor Honours Degree in Education/Teaching; or
- Bachelor Degree in Education/Teaching.
Professional Development
- Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Education/Teaching; or
- Bachelor Honours Degree in Education/Teaching; or
- Bachelor Degree in Education/Teaching.
Relevant fields include education, teaching, training, tutoring, or equivalent.
Related study or work experience can be credited as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and may reduce the number of units you are required to study. RPL will be assessed by the Program Convenor.

1 year full-time or part-time equivalent up to 4 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
This program requires the successful completion of:
- 10 units core – EDUC6010
- One specialisation – 50-70 units depending on the specialisation chosen.
- Electives – 20 units.
Electives must be utilised to complete the requirement of specialisation containing 60 or 70 units, or may be utilised to undertake an additional specified course where they are seeking accreditation of the KLA.
