Epidemiology and Data Sciences

Epidemiology is the study and analysis of the distribution (who, when, and where), patterns and determinants of health and disease in defined populations. If you’re curious about why some illness cluster among certain groups or in specific places, the Epidemiology and Data Science major might be the one for you.

Epidemiology is the foundational scientific method of public health. Students will be introduced to techniques for managing data sets that inform health problems and will develop an understanding of the methods used to generate the evidence base that informs population health interventions.

Underpinning this work are data scientists who ensure that multiple data sources can be integrated and analysed.

Today’s data scientists work in nearly all public health sectors throughout the world to deliver significant improvements informing epidemiological approaches – and ultimately the health of populations. Typical roles include:

  • Biostatistician
  • Data Modeler
  • Epidemiologist
  • Health Data Scientist/Analyst
  • Research Officer
  • Statistician
