Description
Nurses are an essential part of the health care system and work to promote and maintain the health of individuals and communities. Nursing provides varied career opportunities and nurses fulfil diverse roles such as clinicians, educators, researchers and managers.
Intakes for international students are available only at the Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Demonstrated professional practice as it relates to the professional legal and ethical responsibilities which require a satisfactory knowledge base, accountability for practice, functioning in accordance with legislation affecting nursing and health care, and the protection of individual and group rights.
- Understanding of critical thinking and analysis as it relates to self-appraisal, professional development, and the value of evidence and research for practice. Reflecting on practice, feeling and beliefs and the consequences of these for individual/groups is an important professional benchmark.
- The ability to provide and coordinate care as it relates to the coordination, organisation and provision of nursing care that includes the assessment of individual/groups, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
- Understanding of collaborative and therapeutic practice as it relates to establishing, sustaining and concluding professional relationships with individuals/group. This also contains those competencies that relate to the nurse understanding his/her contribution to the interdisciplinary health care team.

Credit transfer
If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution, or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to the new program, visit the University's credit website for more information on applying for credit.
Students holding the following qualifications may be eligible for specified credit on application:
- A TAFE Diploma in Nursing.
- Registration as a professional nurse with a Approved Overseas Nursing Registration Authority.
- Credit may be awarded for students who have completed nursing studies overseas. Credit will be assessed on an individual basis.
Please note that time restrictions apply to the granting of credit in this program.
Compulsory program requirements
Students will complete approximately 800 hours of practical experience throughout the program in a range of diverse clinical contexts throughout the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) sites.
Travel, accomodation and related expenses for clinical placements will be the responsibility of the student.

Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (under AHPRA)
Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

The Bachelor of Nursing degree offered by The University of Newcastle requires completion of 240 units of approved courses.
- 210 units of Core Nursing courses;
- 20 units of Core Human Bioscience courses; and
- 10 units of Elective.

Transition arrangements
This program is in teach-out from 2022. The following teach-out arrangements are in place.
From Semester 1 2023
Students who have not yet successfully completed NURS2102 Clinical Practice 2A should enrol and complete NURS2003 Professional Experience 3.
Students who have not yet successfully completed NURS2202 Clinical Practice 2B should enrol and complete NURS2006 Professional Experience 4.
From Semester 1 2024
Students who have not yet successfully completed NURS3102 Clinical Practice 3A should enrol and complete NURS3003 Professional Experience 5.
From Semester 2 2024
Students who have not yet successfully completed NURS3201 Transition to Professional Practice should enrol and complete NURS3006 Professional Experience 6.
Transition arrangements for Pre-2016 students: Individual assessment will be made to determine the most appropriate course/s in the revised structure. Students should contact the Program Advisor for further information and/or assistance.
Transition arrangements for Pre-2021 students: INDH2000 Foundations of Nursing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is replacing ABOR2000 Foundations of Nursing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from 2021 onwards. If you have successfully completed ABOR2000 prior to 2021, you are not required to complete INDH2000.

Honours
Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) is available as an additional one-year full-time program or equivalent part-time. Candidates for Honours are selected on the basis of academic achievement.
Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
During clinical placement students may be required to wear properly fitted respirators. Fit testing is the process to ensure the respirator fits the wearers face snugly, creating a seal to minimise airbourne particles travelling through gaps between the wearer's skin and the respirator. Students will need to arrange and pay for their own fit testing before attending their first placement and every subsequent 12 months.
International students
All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University.
