Practical Experience

The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration is mostly taught through studio studies and field trips. This practical approach will help you prepare for a career in areas such as medical illustration, archaeology and environmental conservation.

You will also be building up your own illustration portfolio throughout the degree and creating a body of work that could help you gain employment after you graduate.

When you study natural history illustration at the University of Newcastle, you will benefit from various opportunities to showcase your work on campus and through an annual display at Eden Gardens in Sydney.

A wide range of awards and prizes are offered to outstanding students of the natural history illustration degree, including the Australian Geographic Natural History Illustration prize. Many of our students also have the honour of featuring their work in galleries and publications.

Additionally, Bachelor of Natural History Illustration students are eligible to enrol in SCIT3600 which offers you the opportunity to undertake an international placement to expand the theoretical knowledge and skills developed in this program and apply knowledge and skills in an external and international context.
