Midwifery clinical placement locations

Bachelor of Midwifery students undertake their practical experience at a single maternity service located at one of the clinical placement venues listed below and are expected to reside within 1 hour of their allocated placement venue. This is to facilitate the Continuity of Care Experience (CCE) relationships with women that students are required to complete. Depending upon their allocated clinical placement venue students will attend classes at either the Callaghan campus (clinical placement venues located in Maitland, Muswellbrook, Singleton, Scone, Newcastle and Gosford) or the Manning Education Centre in Taree (clinical placement venues located in Taree, Port Macquarie and Kempsey). As part of the application process students select their preferred clinical placement options from the below hospitals.

Clinical Placement Locations

The John Hunter Hospital (JHH) is the principal referral centre and a tertiary hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and northern New South Wales, Australia. JHH provides maternity care to women who live in the Greater Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens area. Around 4,000 babies are born annually at JHH. Models of care available include:

  • Belmont Midwifery Group Practice
  • Midwifery Care in Community Clinics
  • Birth Centre Team Midwifery Group Practice
  • Midwifery Care with the JHH Birth Centre Team
  • Specialist Obstetric Care at JHH Antenatal Clinic

Newcastle Private Hospital provides private maternity services for women in the Newcastle region. Newcastle Private has private birthing suites, a 38-bed maternity ward and eight-bed Level 2 nursery, it provides a comprehensive service supported by the region’s specialists and highly skilled midwifery staff. Around 2,000 babies are born annually at Newcastle private. Maitland Hospital maternity unit is situated on level 2 of the main hospital building, it has 18 antenatal and postnatal beds and 5 birthing rooms. The special care nursery is able to care for babies from 34 weeks gestation onwards. Around 1600 babies are born annually at Maitland hospital. Models of care available at Maitland include:

  • Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Services (AMIHS) antenatal/postnatal and some Intrapartum care

Muswellbrook Hospital maternity unit has nine beds and two birthing rooms. The Hospital provides care for well women and babies born after 37 weeks gestation. The team of midwives at Muswellbrook includes three lactation consultants. Around 230 babies are born annually at Muswellbrook. Models of care provides include:

Scone Hospital maternity unit has six postnatal beds, two birthing rooms and an antenatal clinic. The team of experienced midwives work closely with Scone’s two GP Obstetricians to provide the best possible experience and outcome for local women and their families. Because the community of Scone is relatively small, maternity staff are able to support local women throughout pregnancy, labour and birth.  Around 100 babies are born annually at Scone hospital. Models of care available at Scone include:

Manning (Taree) Hospital provides maternity care for women who live in the Taree and Great Lakes areas. The unit has experienced midwives and doctors who work closely with local specialists and services. Manning Hospital can care for mothers and babies >34 weeks gestation with normal to moderate risk factors and following caesarean section birth. Around 700 babies are born annually at Manning hospital. Models of care available at Manning include:

Port Macquarie Hospital provides maternity care for women who live in the Mid North Coast Region of New South Wales.  The unit has experienced midwives and doctors who work closely with local specialists and services. The maternity unit has 15 antenatal, postnatal and 4 gynaecological beds, 3 birthing rooms, and assessment room and 8 special care nursery beds. Around 850 babies are born annually at Port Macquarie Hospital.
