Description
The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Science combined degree is for those who are interested in understanding the world around us and how it works. Mechanical engineers design, manufacture and optimise specialist machines and processes. They solve important problems using robotics, new advanced materials, the fundamental laws of energy generation and transmission, and the computer control of physical systems from nano-to mega-tonne scale. You will learn from leading researchers who will guide you through a tailored program, specifically designed to give you the skills that employers are seeking. You will be able to follow your passions, and our guidance and mentoring will give you the confidence to know you are heading where you want to go with your career. You will begin the important process of establishing critical professional networks, and you will have authentic opportunities to work with industry whilst you study. This combined program gives you the practical skills to make a difference in the world and contribute new solutions to the many challenges we face.
The Physics major is the only Bachelor of Science major available in this program.

Admission requirements
Admission to this program is available to Australian citizens and residents only.
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC), prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Your degree includes either compulsory or optional courses in maths. To maximise your likelihood of academic success, it is recommended that you select the course which matches your existing knowledge and understanding of maths concepts.

Compulsory program requirements
Industrial Experience is a compulsory requirement of the program. It includes 4 weeks undertaken as part of your in program WIL experience (ENGG3000), and an additional 8 weeks (totaling 12 weeks). Students are encouraged to obtain and to report on a substantial block of this experience at one time, but several shorter periods, of not less than 2 weeks duration, will be accepted. Program requirements
For all combined programs and in accordance with the Program Management Procedure Manual - Coursework, the core and minimum requirements for each single degree component must be met in each combined program. This has been done economically, exploiting overlaps where possible, so that accreditation of either program is not compromised.
The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Science is a five year program, students are required to complete 400 units, which is comprised of:
- 320 units of core courses;
- 80 units - Physics Major (40 units of Core courses also count towards the major for a total of 120 units), including:
- 70 units of compulsory courses; and
- 10 units from the course list.
The Physics major is the only Bachelor of Science major available in this program.
'Step out' Information
The program has a duration of 5 years full time (or part time equivalent). It is possible for a student to 'step out' with a single degree award only and not complete the combined program they are enrolled in. In order to do this, a student would be required to complete all the single degree requirements for their preferred degree and may be required to complete any omitted courses that are not included in the combined degree.
Omitted Courses:
- Bachelor of Science core course STAT1070 Statistics for the Sciences (10 units) has been omitted from the program in lieu of core course ENGG2100 Engineering Risk and Uncertainty (10 units).
- Bachelor of Science core courses SCIE3001A Transdisciplinary Capstone: Planning & Implementing (10 units) and SCIE3001B Transdisciplinary Capstone: Implementing & Communicating (10 units) have been omitted from the program in lieu of core course MECH4841B Mechanical Engineering Project B (20 units).

Honours
The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) component of this combined degree program uses the WAM as a measure for determining Honours. Please refer to the Bachelor Honours Policy for further detailed information.
