A combined Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering degree provides the student with a significant skill set that will offer ongoing benefits. Mechanical engineers facilitate modern society by designing and developing items that function as key infrastructure. Though only a small area of mechanical engineering, the most recognisable mechanical engineering items are transportation devices including automobiles, trains, buses and aircraft. Mechatronics engineers originated from Mechanical engineers though with a particular focus on the implementation of control theory, computers and electronic hardware. The term Mechatronics is now well established and has its own distinct degree structure, which is still rooted in mechanical engineering. It is evident that a significant amount of mechatronics is involved in most modern mechanical devices, and this program recognises that a broader skill base will be necessary in the future of mechanical or mechatronics engineering.

Enrolling in mathematics - Maths placement test

Compulsory program requirements
Requirements for qualification of this award include completion of at least 12 weeks of industrial experience of a nature acceptable to the College Board. Students are encouraged to obtain and to report on a substantial block of this experience at one time, but several shorter periods, of not less than 2 weeks duration, will be accepted. This program is accredited by Engineers Australia, and other affiliated international organisations, through the Washington Accord. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to apply for membership to Engineers Australia.
Academic requirements for program completion
Total units required
5 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 12 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. For all combined programs and in accordance with the Program Management Procedure Manual - Coursework, the core and minimum requirements for each single degree component must be met in each combined program. This has been done economically, exploiting overlaps where possible, so that accreditation of either program is not compromised.
The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours) is a five year program, students are required to complete 400 units, which is comprised of:
- 360 units of core courses;
- 20 units are directed courses; and
- 20 units are elective courses.
Elective courses give students the opportunity to broaden their skills and knowledge in their own or another engineering discipline; or specialise in areas such as business, maths or science; or undertake study overseas.
The program has a duration of 5 years full time (or part time equivalent). It is possible for a student to 'step out' with a single degree award only and not complete the combined program they are enrolled in. In order to do this, a student would be required to complete all the single degree requirements for their preferred degree and may be required to complete any omitted courses that are not included in the combined degree.
A student wishing to 'step out' with a single degree from this combined program should contact their Program Convenor or Academic Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for further information.
Students who do not meet the enrolment requisite for MATH1110 must take MATH1002 Foundational Studies in Mathematics. For these students, MATH1002 will count for 10 units of electives. Students undertaking this pathway will need to be aware of the 1000 level unit restrictions when enrolling in their remaining elective courses.
Students may count PHYS1205 in lieu of PHYS1210 with Program Convenor approval.

Electives can be used to extend and complement your core studies with more courses in the same field of study, or from areas that might be of interest to you. Electives can be chosen from all courses available at the University that do not have any other conditions (such as a course requisite) applied to them.
