Description

The Bachelor of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety was developed by the Schools of Health Sciences and Environmental & Life Sciences of The University of Newcastle, through a partnership with PSB in Singapore. The Schools provide the academic content and theoretical principles and PSB Academy provides the Singapore context and Asian perspective on professional EOHS practice. The program is offered over 2 years or part-time equivalent, but can be completed in 1.5 years by taking 40 units per trimester. 80 units of unspecified credit at Year 1 level is granted to all students who meet the admission requirements. The program is mainly targeted at diploma holders from Polytechnics in Singapore, or equivalent, in the fields of science or engineering. The delivery mode is designed for students who are in full-time work, who wish to study during the evening and at weekends. The degree provides a sound theoretical base and skills necessary to enable graduate professionals to manage effectively new and emerging EOHS issues. The degree is taught and examined in Singapore.


Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

  • Current and in-depth knowledge of relevant behavioural, biological and health sciences and OHS legislative frameworks.
  • Competently applied professional knowledge and high level skills to assess risk and manage implementation of risk control strategies that optimise workplace EOHS.
  • Demonstrated the ability to work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary EOHS team.
  • Communicated effectively with individuals, communities and EOHS teams to promote EOHS and the profession using written, spoken and/or technological modes.
  • Demonstrated the skills to be lifelong learners in personal and/or professional development.
  • Demonstrated a commitment to ethical action and social responsibility as EOHS professionals.

Admission information

Admission requirements

The degree is available to applicants who have successfully completed the following:

  • Diploma in Health, Science or Engineering from a local Polytechnic or other recognised institutions;
  • Diploma in Industrial Engineering from PSB Academy; OR
  • Other Diploma or equivalent qualification that would be assessed on a case by case basis.

Note that, in order to be considered for admission, all previous qualifications must have been completed within eight years prior to lodging an admission application. Applicants with qualifications that are over eight-years-old or with other relevant diploma qualifications may also apply, but will be required to submit a detailed resume outlining work experience and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by The University.

Credit transfer

If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution, or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to the new program, visit the University's credit website for more information on applying for credit.

Holders of the WSQ Specialist Diploma in Workplace Safety and Health will receive further credit in OHSE2610, OHSE2730, OHSE2740 and OHSE3740. Holders of the Environmental Control Officers Certificate (ECO), Singapore will receive further credit in ENVS2710. Additional credit for holders of relevant Graduate Certificates may be negotiated.


Professional recognition

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health

This program is accredited with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. The Bachelor of Environmental Occupational Health and Safety is also recognised by the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore, as an accepted WSH-related qualification.

3 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 8 years maximum.

Program requirements

The program is designed for working adults, who demonstrate that they have already achieved the equivalent of first year study through previous tertiary education. The program of study is therefore designed as a 2 year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program, which can be completed in 1.5 years by taking 40 units per trimester. Sixteen courses (160 units) are offered over three trimester terms per year. The BEnvOHS program is multi-disciplinary and courses cover applied sciences relevant to environment and occupational health; occupational safety and applied engineering; EOHS professional practice, EOHS law and regulation in Singapore; and EOHS management. In addition, some courses cover content from across the broad field of Singaporean and global EOHS policy and practice.

The delivery mode of the program allows students to have considerable flexibility in determining their study load to suit their work and personal commitments. One, two, three or four courses can be studied in each of three trimester terms per year. In order to complete the program in 1.5 years, students must complete 40 units (4 courses) of study per trimester.

Additional information

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
