Study Teaching Mathematics For Secondary Education

Secondary Mathematics involves teaching the core discipline of maths to a broad range of secondary school students.

You can study Mathematics teaching as a teaching area within your Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree. When you study Mathematics as a teaching area, you’ll focus on learning about core concepts in maths relevant to the HSC and junior courses, as well as further developing skills in areas of interest.

The range and type of mathematics our courses focus on includes highly contextualised problems through to more theoretical mathematical concepts. You’ll study concepts such as algebra, differential equations, linear models and statistical analysis. Students can choose to focus on their strengths, or develop skills in an entirely new area of maths.

Students are taught a range of techniques and technologies to assist general life skills. These will also be useful in preparation for further study in fields requiring mathematical understanding, such as the sciences and industrial technologies.

What do you learn in a Mathematics teaching area?

The mathematics teaching area prepares students to teach senior and junior maths courses. You’ll be equipped with specialist teaching skills in a variety of coursework areas. You can study courses in:

  • Mathematical Concepts: Your core courses will focus on the study of key mathematical concepts. Students will learn how to solve problems in statistics, calculus and algebra. You’ll develop skills in thinking and working mathematically, and focus your study around critical knowledge in the maths teaching syllabus.
  • Mathematics for Business, Science and Engineering: If you are studying science or engineering as additional teaching areas, these courses may be of interest to you. You’ll study symbolic manipulation for large numbers or variables, as well as how to use calculus for continuously changing variables. In these courses students will learn critical skills for application to teaching scientific, commercial and industrial disciplines.
  • Mathematics Specialties: Within your mathematics teaching area, you’ll be able to study specialties of your choosing. You can study courses in algebra, mathematical modelling, topology, statistics and inference, among other subject areas. This will prepare you to teach a variety of topics in the HSC and junior maths courses.
