Society and Culture explores the interaction of persons, societies, cultures, environments and time. It draws on concepts from a range of disciplines, such as: anthropology, communication, cultural studies, media studies, philosophy, psychology, social ecology and sociology.1
Within the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree at the University of Newcastle, you can study Society and Culture as a teaching area. By studying this teaching area, you will develop specialist subject expertise across a range of social and cultural studies disciplines including:
- recent theory, practice, knowledge and understanding (broad and critical) of related academic disciplines
- interactions of persons, societies, cultures and environments across time
- continuity and change, personal and social futures and strategies for change
- role of power, identity, gender, technologies and globalisation in societies and cultures
- social research skills, protocols and ethical practices
- social and cultural literacy concepts
You’ll learn the skills to teach the Society and Culture HSC course, as well as relevant junior elective classes. This will be of particular interest to students who have a passion for studying and teaching about human societies, environments, and cultures.

As a qualified HSIE Society and Culture secondary school teacher, you will impart teachings that directly impact your students in the short and long term, allowing them to develop an understanding of themselves in relation to their own society and culture, as well as others’ societies and cultures.

What do you learn in a Society and Culture teaching area?
By studying a teaching area in teaching society and culture, you will be given the option to study a range of courses across a selection of subject areas. We offer courses in:
- Sociology and Anthropology: Your first year will focus on the study of key concepts in sociology and anthropology. You will learn about the various methodologies used to examine social patterns, action and change.
- Social Analysis and Research: This component of the society and culture teaching area will see students learn about the analytical methodologies in social research. You will study class, inequality, social capital, gender, policy, employment and welfare among other concepts.
- Society and Culture Specialties: We offer a variety of courses which allow you to specialise in areas of interest. You can study youth culture, food, ethics, indigenous culture, policy development and more. These courses are designed to drive your passion for the discipline and to guide your topic choices when you come to teach the HSC and junior syllabi.
