Description
A good teacher can have a profound effect on a young person's outlook on education, their career aspirations and life generally. The Bachelor of Education (Primary Studies) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as Primary or Elementary teachers in their home countries (Graduates should check their local accreditation requirements to determine the suitability of this program). The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, knowledgeably and effectively in their Primary school destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.
Career opportunities include: Primary school teacher, specialist teacher in primary school, special education, English as a second language teacher, community educator, educational researcher, education publication writer or editor, education policy analyst, education consultant, curriculum developer, educational materials developer, curriculum evaluator, and educational administrator.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- a broad and coherent body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as a basis for independent lifelong learning
- cognitive skills to review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge
- cognitive and technical skills to demonstrate a broad understanding of knowledge with depth in some areas

Admission information
Admission requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, overseas senior secondary qualifications, prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Credit transfer

Compulsory program requirements
This degree requires students to participate in two placements:
- Completion of 20 days teacher observations in a K-6 setting in a NSW Department of Education or other NSW school or service providers; and
- Completion of 50 days of supervised practice in a Primary school setting in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
Placements may extend beyond normal semester times and students must meet their own associated travel and accommodation costs, where applicable.
During placement, students will be subject to the policies and procedures of the placement facility.
Students must meet all the Education Placement Requirements, including a NSW Working with Children clearance.

4 years full-time.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
The Bachelor of Education (Primary Studies) program requires the successful completion of 330 units.Students are required to successfully complete:
- 280 units of Core Courses; and
- 40 units from the course list (with no more than 20 units at the 1000 level) chosen from ONE Discipline Depth Study Area; and
- 10 units of Electives.
Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000).
Students must not exceed 120 units at 1000 level.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 330 units.
Students must complete all 40 units from the ONE Discipline Depth Study area (with no more than 20 units at the 1000 level):
- Creative Arts
- Human Society and its Environment
- Mathematics
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
- Science and Technology
- Special Education
All EDUC core and compulsory courses have requisites. This means to enrol, students must successfully complete the previous course or courses in sequence. This sequence is detailed in the students relevant Program Plan.
Students will be required to undertake the final Internship course, EDUC4302 International Internship: Primary, in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
