Description
The early years of any child's life are crucial to their later education and life experience. To be entrusted with teaching and caring for young children is an enormous responsibility but also a great privilege. Early childhood teaching is a truly rewarding professional career where you can really make a difference.
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary Studies) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as Early Childhood Educators or Primary / Elementary school teachers, in their home countries (Graduates should check their local accreditation requirements to determine the suitability of this program). The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, knowledgeably and effectively in their educational destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.
Career opportunities include: Early Childhood Teacher, Early Childhood Centre Director, Primary school teacher, specialist teacher in primary school, community educator, educational researcher, education publication writer or editor, education policy analyst, education consultant, curriculum developer, educational materials developer, curriculum evaluator, and educational administrator.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- a broad and coherent body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as a basis for independent lifelong learning

Admission requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, overseas senior secondary qualifications, prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Credit transfer

Compulsory program requirements
This degree requires students to participate in two placements:
- Completion of 20 days teacher observations - consisting of 10 days in an Early Childhood setting catering for 0-5 year olds, and 10 days in a K-6 setting in a NSW Department of Education or other NSW school or service providers; and
- Completion of 50 days - consisting of 10 days observation (5 days in an Early Childhood setting and 5 days in a Primary School) and 40 days of supervised practice in an Early Childhood setting (the definition of which may vary according to the jurisdictional requirements) in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
Placements may extend beyond normal semester times and students must meet their own associated travel and accommodation costs, where applicable.
During placement, students will be subject to the policies and procedures of the placement facility.
Students must meet all the Education Placement Requirements, including a NSW Working with Children clearance.

Program duration
4 years full-time.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary Studies) program requires the successful completion of 330 units.
Students must complete 320 units of Core courses and 10 units of Electives.
Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000).
Students must not exceed 100 units at 1000 level.
Students will be required to undertake the final Internship course, EDUC4301 International Internship: Early Childhood (Birth-12 years), in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program.

Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
