Bachelor of Communication

What you will study

The Bachelor of Communication is a three year full-time (or equivalent part-time) degree offered at our Newcastle campus at Callaghan. It is designed to prepare you to work creatively and analytically in the communication and cultural industries, and for further study and research in the field.

The Bachelor of Communication core courses will provide you with a broad understanding of the discipline of communication; an introduction to audio, video and web production; a toolkit of professional and academic analytical skills; and an understanding of creative, professional practice.


There are four majors offered through the Bachelor of Communication at the University of Newcastle. A major is an area you can specialise in within your communication degree. It allows you to gain in-depth skills and a solid understanding of the key principles in your chosen specialty.

Our communication degree also allows you to combine majors to extend your professional skills and knowledge. Depending on your major, you will also have the opportunity to select from courses covering topics such as:

  • cultural studies
  • magazine and broadcast journalism
  • media interviewing
  • media production
  • photomedia
  • professional writing
  • public relations practice
  • screenwriting

You can also take elective courses from a range of disciplines to complete the Bachelor of Communication, including history, English, religion or sociology.

If you perform well in your Bachelor of Communication you are encouraged to undertake another year of study to obtain an Honours degree which will give you a competitive edge and enhance your career prospects.

Combined degree

If you are interested in studying a combined Bachelor of Communication/Bachelor of Laws degree you can graduate with two degree in just five years of full-time study.
