Description

The Bachelor of Commerce is your first step to becoming a fully qualified accountant or undertaking careers in finance and economics. You'll be exposed to industry-relevant areas of study including the opportunity to specialise in one of three major sequences: Accounting; Economics; or Finance. As accountancy and financial management are at the very heart of all organisations, you will find commerce is a field offering enormous scope and opportunity.

Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.

Academic requirements for program completion

Total units required

240 units

Program duration

3 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 8 years maximum.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. International students requiring enrolment advice should review the program plan corresponding to the semester and year of commencement and can contact their Program Advisor at ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au

Program requirements

The Bachelor of Commerce requires students to successfully complete 240 units, which is comprised of: 

  • 80 units of core courses; 
  • One 60 unit major (20 units of Core courses also count towards the major for a total of 80 units);
  • 10 units from the Career-ready placement Course list;
  • 90 units of electives; and
  • PSB Singapore students will take 100 units of electives.

Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000, 2000, 3000).  

Students must not exceed 100 units at 1000 level.  

Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 240 units.

Majors

Students must complete at least one major sequence to fulfil the requirements of their program. Some core courses also count towards specific majors as listed below. 

Students may utilise their elective courses to undertake a double major. Students must ensure that each major has 60 units of unique courses.

Accounting 

Core courses ACFI1001 and ACFI1002 count towards this major. To fulfil the requirements of this major, students must complete 60 units of compulsory course. 

Economics 

Core courses ECON1001 and ECON1002 count towards this major. To fulfil the requirements of this major, students must complete 30 units of compulsory courses and 30 units of courses from the course list. 

Finance

Core courses ACFI1001 and ACFI1002 count towards this major. To fulfil the requirements of this major, students must complete 30 units of compulsory courses and 30 units of courses from the course list (students must complete 20 units of courses from Group A course list and 10 units of courses from Group B course list). 

Not all major sequences are located at each location.

Greater Bank Finance Lab - Located on level one of the University’s new state of the art CBD vertical campus, NUspace, the Greater Bank Finance Lab is a hands-on learning environment, enabling University of Newcastle Business School students to build their skills in financial decision making, risk management and economic systems, before they graduate.

Program Revisions 2023

From Semester 1, 2023 the Bachelor of Commerce program has been revised to remove 10 units of electives, which has been replaced by a 10 unit Career-ready placement course. 

Students who commenced prior to 2023 will not be required to undertake 10 units from the Career-ready placement Course list and will retain 10 units of electives. Continuing students may choose to take a course from the Career-ready placement Course list as an elective.

Program Revisions 2021

Prior to 2021 students were required to complete 70 units of Core courses and 10 units of Core Directed courses toward the Bachelor of Commerce. From Semester 1, 2021 onward, students are required to complete 80 units of Core courses toward the Bachelor of Commerce (STAT1060 Business Decision Making added to Core course list). The Core Directed course requirement has been removed. Transition arrangements are as follows:

  • Students who have completed ECON1003 Basic Econometrics and Quantitative Modelling or STAT1070 Statistics for the Sciences as a Core Directed course prior to 2021 will continue to count ECON1003 or STAT1070 toward their program and are not required to complete STAT1060.
  • Students who have not completed a Core Directed course prior to 2021 will complete STAT1060 Business Decision Making as a Core course toward their program and are not required to complete ECON1003 or STAT1070.

Honours

Additional information

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
