Description

The civil engineer's job is to solve problems relating to the infrastructure of modern society, and to consider the environmental impact, efficiency and cost effectiveness of this infrastructure. For example, civil engineers may be involved in establishing whether or not a building design is safe, or may inspect and analyse a dam wall to see if it is structurally sound. Civil engineers enjoy excellent career prospects as they are involved in so many facets of everyday life and its associated infrastructure.

Admission requirements

Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.

The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC), prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Enrolling in mathematics - Maths placement test

Compulsory program requirements

Industrial Experience is a compulsory requirement of the program. It includes 4 weeks undertaken as part of your in program WIL experience (ENGG3000), and an additional 8 weeks (totaling 12 weeks). Students are encouraged to obtain and to report on a substantial block of this experience at one time, but several shorter periods, of not less than 2 weeks duration, will be accepted. If you are enrolled concurrently in 2 single Bachelor (Honours) Engineering programs, you are required to complete 12 weeks Industrial Experience in total across either, or both, of the relevant Engineering Disciplines.

320 units

Program duration

4 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 10 years maximum.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) is a four year program, students are required to complete 320 units, which is comprised of:

  • 260 units of core courses;
  • 20 units core design courses;
  • 10 units of project core courses; and
  • 30 units of elective courses.

No more than 120 units can be taken at 1000 level; and at least 40 units must be taken at each level from the 2000 level and above for this program. 

Elective Pathway

An elective pathway gives students the opportunity to broaden their skills and knowledge in their own or another engineering discipline; or specialise in areas such as business, maths or science; or undertake study overseas. Students should be aware of the 120 unit maximum for 1000 level unit courses when selecting their elective pathway.

Mathematics Pathways 

Students who do not meet the enrolment requisite for MATH1110 must take MATH1002 Foundational Studies in Mathematics. For these students MATH1002 will count for 10 units of electives. Students undertaking this pathway will need to be aware of the 1000 level unit restrictions when enrolling in their remaining elective courses.

Physics Pathways

Students may choose to undertake PHYS1210 Advanced Physics 1 in lieu of PHYS1205 with Program Convenor approval. Additionally, students who have completed PHYS1210 who have transferred to a program that requires PHYS1205 can count PHYS1210 in lieu of PHYS1205.

  • Please note that if you undertake courses that are not in your approved program, you will be liable for additional fees for those courses. This is in addition to the fees associated with your normal program of study.
