Description
The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Science combined degree program is offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment and the Faculty of Science. This program provides students with the opportunity to undertake concurrent study in Chemical Engineering and Science with a major in Chemistry (Advanced Materials) and complete two awards. In general, a combined degree program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills.
The Chemistry (Advanced Materials) major is the only Bachelor of Science major available in this program.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Program Learning Outcomes as per those for the single degree programs.

Program duration
5 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 12 years maximum.
Program requirements
For all combined programs and in accordance with the Program Management Procedure Manual - Coursework, the Core and minimum requirements for each single degree component must be met in each combined program. This has been done economically, exploiting overlaps where possible, so that accreditation of either program is not compromised.
The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Science program is a five year program, students are required to complete a total of 400 units, which is comprised of:
- 320 units of Core courses
- 60 units of courses for the Major (20 units of Core courses also count towards the major for a total of 80 units):
- 40 units of Compulsory courses
- 20 units chosen from the course list; and
- 20 units of Electives.
The Chemistry (Advanced Materials) major is the only Bachelor of Science Major available in this program.
No more than 120 units can be taken at 1000 level; and at least 40 units must be taken at each level from the 2000 level and above for this program.
Elective Pathway
An Elective pathway gives students the opportunity to broaden their skills and knowledge in their own or another engineering discipline; or specialise in areas such as business, maths or science; or undertake study overseas. Please be aware of the 120 unit maximum for 1000 level courses in your program when selecting your Elective pathway.
Step-out Information
The program has a duration of 5 years full time (or part time equivalent). It is possible for a student to 'step out' with a single degree award only and not complete the combined program they are enrolled in. In order to do this, a student would be required to complete all the single degree requirements for their preferred degree and may be required to complete any omitted courses that are not included in the combined degree.Omitted Courses:
- Bachelor of Science core course STAT1070 Statistics for the Sciences (10 units) has been omitted from the program in lieu of core course STAT2110 Engineering Statistics (10 units).
- Bachelor of Science core courses SCIE3001A Transdisciplinary Capstone: Planning & Implementing (10 units) and SCIE3001B Transdisciplinary Capstone: Implementing & Communicating (10 units) have been omitted from the program in lieu of core courses CHEE4975A Chemical Engineering Research A (10 units) and CHEE4975B Chemical Engineering Research B (10 units).
A student wishing to 'step out' with a single degree from this combined program should contact their Program Convenor or Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for further information.
Mathematics Pathways
Students who do not meet the enrolment requisite for MATH1110 must take MATH1002 Foundational Studies in Mathematics. For these students MATH1002 will count for 10 units of electives. Students undertaking this pathway will need to be aware of the 1000 level unit restrictions when enrolling in their remaining elective courses.
Physics Pathways
Students may count PHYS1205 in lieu of PHYS1210 with Program Convenor approval.
- Students wishing to undertake this program on a part-time basis are advised to contact the Program Convenor or Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for advice on optimum selection of courses for part-time enrolment.
- Please note that if you undertake courses that are not in your approved program, you will be liable for additional fees for those courses. This is in addition to the fees associated with your normal program of study.
