What do you learn in an Ancient History minor?

When you study a minor in ancient history, you will learn how to use archaeological and written sources to conduct research into the following areas:

  • Ancient Greek Civilisation: In first year your introductory courses will allow you to study the history of the Greek cities from the Bronze Age to the Persian Wars. Later in your degree you will be able to focus your studies on specific Ancient Greek societies, such as Athens and Sparta.
  • Ancient Roman Civilisation: Courses in Roman civilisation focus on the archaeology, history and culture of the city of Rome, and the territories it controlled between 753 BCE and 476 CE. Your courses will focus on analysing the remaining archaeological sites in the city for evidence of Roman life. You will also learn about key periods in Roman history such as the Augustan Revolution.
  • Ancient Mythology: The Greek and Roman myths are the earliest stories in the Western literary tradition. Courses in mythology will teach you about the gods, goddesses and heroes of Greek and Roman tradition, as well as the writers who preserved their tales for posterity.
