Moving out can be a daunting yet exciting experience. If you’re thinking about taking this step towards independence, there are a number of accommodation options open to you depending on your situation. Whether you plan to live on or off campus we recommend starting your search early to make sure you find a place that is best suited to your needs.
Living on a student income can be tricky at times. You will need to make a budget and learn how to stick to it, but we can help. If you need financial support, consider:

Health Service - The University’s Health Service is a fully accredited general practice and is open to UON students and staff. All consultations are strictly confidential. Patients covered by Medicare are bulk billed. International students may be covered for medical services depending on your health cover.
Student Advisors - Student Central’s Student Advisors help you access all of UON’s support services. They can help create an individualised plan aimed at helping you succeed in your studies. They can also provide direction on your enrolment and will check in with you to ensure you’re staying on track for success.
Gym and Sporting Facilities - We have various sporting facilities at both our Newcastle and Central Coast campus.For Callaghan students, the University’s on-campus gym is The Forum. Our other gym is located in town at 5 Workshop Way, Newcastle near City campus. Students are eligible for discounted membership fees. Central Coast campus students have free access to Your Gym in the Exercise & Sport Science Building.
Student Support Advisors - Student Support Advisors can help with lots of different questions or concerns and connect you to the right people, including disability support and counsellors who provide free and confidential assistance for personal or study related issues. If you aren’t able to get to campus to see someone, online counselling options are also available.
The Wollotuka Institute - is the University’s Indigenous cultural and academic centre and offers a range of support for Indigenous students.
UON Global - provides a range of programs for international students designed to make your time at UON a rich and academically rewarding experience.
ALLY - The University has an ALLY network comprising of students and staff. The ALLY network raises awareness of LGBTI+ issues on campus and promotes a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive culture at UON. NUSA also has a support network and a dedicated safe space for queer-identifying students.
Other services on campus
Retail outlets: we have a wide range of cafés, restaurants and bars to make sure our students are well catered for as they go about their day.
Prayer rooms: there are male and female Muslim prayer rooms on Callaghan campus available for student use. To request access and find their locations, visit or email Student Central. Access will be added to your student card within 24 hours.
Survival stations: there are microwaves available for students to heat up their own food and hot water across campus:
- Callaghan- Auchmuty Information Common, Shortland Building, and Hunter Building.
- Ourimbah- the Library, Main Cafeteria and Classrooms South.
- Port Macquarie- hot water is also available from the Student Central area in B Block.
Childcare: childcare services operate on campus and are community-based centres that are open to the general public as well as staff and students.
Computing facilities: computers are available for your use in general access areas that include dedicated labs, libraries and even some at Student Central. You can access our PCseeker tool via myUON.
Printing and Photocopying: The University’s printing system provides students with access to black and white and colour printing facilities. Printing is charged on a per page basis. The Print Centre also offers special printing and binding services. For Port Macquarie students a Papercut printing solution is in use at the TAFE campus. When you receive your student ID card, you can obtain a printer DOT on your card from Student Central.
