Requests for supports are assessed individually. Access to some services can take up to four weeks.

Supports offered through AccessAbility

AdvocacyContact us if you need help negotiating reasonable adjustments for lectures, tutorials and assessment tasks.
Assessment supportTalk to your lecturer first and, if needed, we can help you negotiate flexible assessment due dates and alternative assessment arrangements.

Auslan or signed English interpreters

We can arrange interpreters to support students in lectures and tutorials as well as in some assessment contexts.

Computer access

This may include providing a large computer screen or screen enlargement software or the provision of an accessible desk in a computer lab. It may include one-on-one training on how to use an adaptive software program or a trackball pointing device.

Equipment loans

The Adaptive Technology Centre provides equipment loans to eligible students. This may include different types of digital audio recorders, hearing augmentation devices, and trackballs. Loans are managed through the library system.

Ergonomic furniture

We have a range of ergonomic furniture and aids available for loan including:

Back supports
Book holders
Ergonomic chairs
Height-adjustable desks for sitting or standing
Mattresses for resting and stretching whilst studying
Monitor arms
Reading stands

Formal exam support

Alternative arrangements for formal examinations are available. These may include extra time to complete an exam, ergonomic furniture or accessible format exam papers. You need to register and apply for this support in advance of your examinations.

You can also apply for adjustments for school and class exams or tests. These are exams and tests that do not occur in the formal examination period. Your alternative arrangements for school based exams and tests will be outlined on a Reasonable Adjustment Plan once you are registered.

Lecture support

We can help you access lectures through:

FM and infrared audio systems
notes supplied by lecturer
placement of ergonomic furniture
recordings of lectures
room changes to accessible rooms (if a class is timetabled in an inaccessible room)
sign language interpreters

Talk to your lecturer or your Student Support Advisor – AccessAbility or contact the Adaptive Technology Centre for information regarding the equipment and technology installed in your lecture or seminar venue and how it might be used to meet your access needs.

Library support

We may be able to assist you with physical access to our libraries and with obtaining materials.

Mobility van service on campus

Mobility assistance around campus may be available if your disability makes it difficult to move around campus. Once you are registered, you will need to book this service at least one week in advance. Once you have your uni timetable, contact us to arrange regular on campus mobility assistance.


Visitors with an RMS Mobility Permit displayed are eligible for free parking in disabled, staff and general car parking spaces at our campuses.

If you need closer parking because of a temporary medical condition you can apply for a University disability access permit.

Print materials in accessible formatsThe Adaptive Technology Centre can convert printed and digital reading material into accessible formats for students who have a documented print disability. This could include a hard copy course reader, a required textbook or a PDF document from an online database. A range of accessible formats can be provided depending on your level of print disability, the type of reading material being converted and your computer competency.
