Student Media

Yak Media is the University of Newcastle’s student media channel which is run by students for students.Yak consists of Yak Editorial, which includes a printed magazine and a blog, and Yak TV. Yak works hard to bring you stories covering all aspects of student life, from health and wellbeing, to travel and entertainment, to politics and study tips.

Students who volunteer with Yak can apply to be apart of the regular Yak crew or can sign up as a contributor. Students from all faculties and campuses are encouraged to apply.

Yak Media provides students with the opportunity to gain work experience in areas such as journalism, media production, graphic design and promotions. You can get your Yak Media fix in print via the magazine, digitally via the Yak Media website, or by watching Yak TV online.

This will be suited to people who like writing, photography, graphic design and film presenting and production. Great experience for students wanting to work in the media.

Opus is the University of Newcastle’s longest-running and wholly student-run publication. Established in 1954, Opus has provided an outlet for the political, linguistic and artistic voice of countless students, and has been a stepping stone for current Australian journalists.

Opus is open to submissions of prose, feature articles, reviews and art, and contributors are encouraged to play with format and style.

Opus is directed by the NUSA Media Collective, which meets regularly. Students may get involved by e-mailing or joining the Media Collective Facebook group.
