Local Matters at GT Bar

We're bringing you something new

Recent student surveys overwhelmingly identified that students are seeking affordable, fresh and quality food and drink options on campus.

With the expertise of one of the nation’s leading hospitality architects to guide us, we are undertaking a new fit-out of the GT Bar. When the bar is complete in mid-2020, you will have access to a revitalised space where you can meet, grab a drink or a bite to eat in a casual all-day dining setting.

The new fit-out will include a casual lounge area and bar which flows out to the licensed Derkenne Courtyard, and a dining area inside with a range a menu options for you to share a meal with friends and colleagues.

Local Matters Restaurant

Did you know that inside the University’s Treehouse Room in the Shortland Building there is a bookable, casual all-day dining venue?

Unfortunately, Local Matters Restaurant is temporarily unavailable. Following Government directives issued on 22 March 2020, Local Matters Restaurant is closed and not taking bookings at this time. We will continue to follow Government advice and will reopen as soon as we are able. If you have any questions about planning future events, please do not hesitate to contact our team at venuesandevents@newcastle.edu.au.

We have secured the talents of Sprout Catering and Restaurant Mason to cater to a diverse range of menu options and event styles. Local Matters took first orders in November 2019 and the availability of this venue added invaluable social atmosphere to the celebrations for the December 2019 Graduations and patrons since have been thrilled with the experience.

When it reopens, you can book at table at Local Matters from Monday to Friday and be treated to chef-prepared brunches, lunches, morning and afternoon teas through a range of menu options.

Local Matters can deliver a unique, quality dining experience right here on Callaghan campus and is the perfect local choice for your next staff or private function.

Project updates

March 2020

From 4 March - 30 March 2020, the bar’s interior is set to be demolished to get ready for the new tenant. During this time there will be some noisy works inside and around the bar so your patience and understanding is appreciated.
