This course examines tourism planning as both a process and as a set of techniques for sustainable tourism development. Tourism is a dynamic industry sector which is heavily influenced by political forces and their policies. Public policy determines the manner in which the tourism industry exists within communities and operates in the marketplace as it guides industry practice, tourism planning and development. To develop sustainable patterns within the tourism sector requires knowledge of the processes of policy development, stakeholder involvement, questions of implementation and the consequences thereof. In this course you will evaluate public and private sector roles relating to the nature of tourism development in specific settings, and its parameters and constraints. You will study the physical environment of strategic planning, and the social, cultural and political contexts of tourism planning and policy making. This course is designed to develop both professional knowledge and skills in tourism policy-making processes, strategic tourism planning and the evaluation of tourism plans and policies from local, national and international industry perspectives.

1. Define and explain key concepts and issues concerning sustainable tourism planning, tourism public policy and tourism management;
2. Critically evaluate several important tourism planning approaches and models;
3. Identify key stakeholders involved in tourism planning and policy-making;
4. Assess government and industry roles and responsibilities in tourism planning and policy-making;
5. Critically analyse and evaluate tourism planning and policy approaches;
6. Compare and contrast planning and policy approaches to tourism undertaken in selected countries and regions
7. Communicate the connections between theory and research and current issues and practices in Sustainable Tourism Planning in an industry-accepted form of communication
