Description

This course is the second half of a two course pair: SCIE3001A

Transdisciplinary Capstone A: Planning & Implementing and SCIE3001B.

Transdisciplinary Capstone B: Implementing & Communicating.

You will undertake a 12 week transdisciplinary scientific project across these courses. The practical science project you undertake will vary according to your career aspirations, in either research or industry, and will provide the opportunity to work locally, nationally or globally. To reflect on future relevant skill sets, you will take the role of freelancer and will demonstrate autonomous self-management throughout the project; however, you will also be supported through directed course learning, collaborative peer support and mentoring.

In SCIE3001A, you will plan and begin to undertake your project. You will also reflect on the employability skill sets you have developed. In SCIE3001B you will complete your project and communicate your findings. You will draw on your reflection to write a job application.

    Multi-term sequence

    This course is part of a multi-term sequence. Both Part A and Part B must be completed to meet the requirements of the sequence. Part A and Part B must be completed in consecutive terms. Students must complete Part A before completing Part B. Students must complete the sequence within a twelve month period. If students complete Part A but are unable to complete Part B within the timeframe, they must re-enrol in Part A.


    Learning outcomes

    On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

    1. Plan, undertake and report on a project investigating a particular complex scientific challenge, and communicate research findings as suitable for a commissioning client.

    2. Communicate research project findings in a form suitable for lay audiences, such as diverse stakeholders in a research project.

    3. Use reflection on the skillsets required for transdisciplinary science work and careers to prepare a written job application.


    Content

    • Plan and undertake a scientific research project, including research design, literature review, methodology design and documentation, and write up findings, discussion and recommendations where appropriate.
    • Refine research skills.
    • Refine scientific writing skills.
    • Take part in peer feedback and support as part of a transdisciplinary advisory team member.
    • Communicate research findings to lay audiences.
    • Reflect on the skillsets required for transdisciplinary science work.
    • Communicate science and transferrable skills.

    Requisite

    Students must have successfully completed SCIE3001A to enrol in this course.
