Description

This course introduces the practice of psychology with an emphasis on the identification of psychopathology across the life span. The course covers the challenges present at each phase of development i.e. infancy, childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle age, young old age and old age. The course covers key issues relating to psychological wellbeing associated with each phase of adulthood. The course explores the psychological and social pressures encountered in different stages of adulthood and how psychologists provide support for clients who present with problems and disorders at different stages of their lifespan.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate the common diagnostic systems of child/adolescent and adult psychopathology.

2. Critique the diagnostic criteria for a range of major psychopathological syndromes.

3. Construct a case formulation to diagnose a range of psychological disorders.

4. Implement treatment plans and evaluate their success

5. Identify and apply a range of psychological interventions

  • Cognitive, behavioural, and systemic interventions
  • Professional and ethical issues specific to each stage of the lifespan

Assumed knowledge

It is assumed that students will have completed a four-year program in Psychology which has been accredited by the Australian Psychological Society.
