Description
ORHL2106 relates to understanding and the provision of specialised oral health care to groups within the community who are known to have additional needs. This includes the elderly, Indigenous Australians, those with physical and mental disabilities, patients with chronic or complex medical conditions and those undergoing complex medical treatment including chemo- and radiotherapy. This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to demonstrate clinical safety and to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program. Students are unable to enrol in Year 3 clinical courses until they have passed this course.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Describe and apply appropriate and effective communication with social and cultural sensitivity, with patients, carers and team members;
2. Describe and apply Oral Health education strategies to groups and individuals;
3. Describe and apply an understanding of the general and oral health needs of the elderly within our community;
4. Describe and apply an understanding of the general and oral health needs of Indigenous Australians within our community;
5. Describe and apply an understanding of the general and oral health needs of special needs groups within our community;
6. Demonstrate competency in the use of an evidence based approach to the provision of information and care for these members of the community

Requisite
This course is only available to students in the B Oral Health Therapy [12390] program.
Pre-requisite: students must also have successfully completed ORHL2102, ORHL2103, and ORHL2104.
Assumed knowledge
This course builds directly on, and requires that you have passed ORHL2101, ORHL2102, ORHL2103 and ORHL2104.
