Course handbook


This course allows students to broaden their knowledge and skills in the assessment and nursing management of the neonate, child and younger person (hereafter called the child) and his/her family with an acute or chronic illness. It addresses general concepts of neonatal, child and youth health nursing practice, as well as the management of clinical problems. Nursing interventions required for both the child and his/her family to function at the best possible level are explored.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Utilise evidence based research and contemporary knowledge to explore nursing interventions and treatment in the care of the child with an acute or chronic illness.

2. Demonstrate the application of theoretical knowledge of the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of interventions that are essential for the nursing care of a ill child and his/her family.

3. Reflect on, and critically analyse issues impacting on the ongoing care of a child and his/her family in a variety of situations through the use of practice based scenarios

4. Identify the rationale for providing nursing care, which is congruent with a family centred approach to care.


Problem based learning principles are applied to clinical scenarios in child and youth health nursing in order to develop the students:

  1. Advanced and discerning assessment skills
  2. Clinical and diagnostic data analysis
  3. Proficiency in the application of theoretical concepts and principles
  4. Application of evidence based practice to clinical interventions
  5. Innovation and flexibility in approaches to the delivery of care to children and their families

The following issues related to children and young people are addressed:

Module 1: Introduction to the Nursing Management of Children

  • Children are different
  • Child growth and development
  • Health promotion
  • The hospitalised child
  • Family dynamics and the sick child
  • Caring for families from a strengths perspective

Module 2:  Assessment and Management of Acute Illness

  • Assessment of the acutely ill child
  • Early recognition of the deteriorating child
  • Neonatal and Paediatric advanced life support
  • Stabilisation and transportation

Module 3: Chronic Illness

  • Chronic health problems in children: Asthma, Diabetes, Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Chronic illness and its effect on the child and family
  • Transition care to adult Services

Assumed knowledge

Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology and sociology, as related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice. Demonstrated ANCI competencies at the beginning Registered Nurses level.
