This course is designed for midwives to make a contribution to the midwifery discipline. Midwives will increase their midwifery leadership skills by acting as role models for their peers and students. Midwives will understand the importance of developing and maintaining a public health profile within the midwifery discipline and extend their skills in consultative and collaborative practice. Midwives will explore the significance of creating and maintaining a positive workplace culture to ensure zero tolerance of xenophobia, discrimination and horizontal violence. Midwives will gain an understanding of human rights regarding asylum seekers and refugees and women's rights in childbearing. The importance of evidence based practice and research contributes further to the midwifery discipline and midwives' professional development.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Analyse the concept of advanced practice;
2. Discuss workplace culture and the role of leadership in eliminating harassment, horizontal violence and bullying in the work place;
3. Access, retrieve and critique research articles;
4. Review and evaluate individual midwifery practice to ensure practice is current and evidence informed;
5. Critique the political and cultural context of childbearing in Australia using a human rights framework when working with asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants;
6. Appraise the impact of power relations on midwifery practice when dealing with issues of domestic violence, child sexual assault and the right not to be pregnant versus the right to life;
7. Critically evaluate the effect of the media on childbearing families and its role in the social construction of childbearing and parenthood;
8. Discuss multidisciplinary consultation and collaboration when working with women and families faced with miscarriage, grief and loss, infertility, antenatal and postnatal depression.
This course includes advanced practice, leadership and workplace culture; the nature of knowledge and evidence as continually evolving and the requirement for current evidence informed practice; cultural diversity and human rights; power and empowerment; consultative and collaborative practice.
This course is comprised of four modules.

This course is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Midwifery or Master of Midwifery Studies programs.
Bachelor of Midwifery (or equivalent) or completion of a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery together with current authority to practice as a registered midwife.
