Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Synthesize their understanding of socio-cultural, political, legal and professional factors, and health system structures that influence clinical practice, education and safety in health care services;
2. Justify a well developed and articulated position statement on professional accountability
3. Demonstrate cultural and indigenous safety by incorporating cultural beliefs and practices into all aspects of nursing practice
4. Demonstrate a capacity to influence discussion on a range of contemporary issues of relevance to own practice and the discipline of nursing;
5. Demonstrate knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, quality and safety for advanced nursing practice;
Content
Module 1: Advanced Practice in the Health Care System
This module explores political and socio-cultural factors that influence scope of practice, policy and legislation governing clinical practice and health systems and structures.
Module 2: Issues in Contemporary Nursing
This module explores a range of contemporary issues in clinical practice and the workplace. It includes content related to the health of vulnerable and minority-vulnerable minority population groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other sexually or gender diverse people (LGBTIQA+) and others. Cultural safety will be explored, actively engaging students in identifying and critically appraising issues pertinent to their practice. This includes supporting a wide range of diversity dimensions, health equity and inclusion measures incorporating health literacy and health advocacy.
Module 3: Transforming Health through Nursing Leadership
This module explores clinical governance, risk management and quality and safety in advanced nursing practice. Students will evaluate the role of advanced practice nurses in nursing leadership including participation in the development of health policy, legislation and clinical governance. Students will be challenged to think about nursing on a global scale with the aim of supporting nurses to think globally and act locally to influence change.
Assumed knowledge
Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice. Demonstrated Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council competencies.
