Description

This course is premised on the belief that effective leadership, mentoring and clinical teaching can transform practice. It examines theories relevant to adult learning, leadership, mentorship, preceptorship, and clinical supervision. Students will be provided with opportunities to integrate this knowledge into their own clinical practice and to reflect on and learn from this experience.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding integral to leadership in the contemporary health care environment

2. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding integral to adult learning principles and teaching practices

3. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding integral to mentorship, preceptorship and clinical supervision

Content

Module 1 - Leadership

Successful completion of this module will enable you to:

• discuss the difference between leadership and management
• identify the attributes of an effective nursing or midwifery leader
• discuss the characteristics and utility of different leadership styles
• demonstrate understanding of the leadership role of the nurse/midwife in the current Australian health care context
• identify the factors that create positive and collaborative working relationships
• engage in self-reflection as a process to enhance one's understanding of their personal styles of communication
• identify how organisational cultures and management styles impact on communication, staff satisfaction, stress, morale, motivation and performance
• demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of conflict and how conflict is manifested in organisational contexts
• identify strategies and techniques useful in successful negotiation and conflict management

Module 2 - Clinical teaching

Successful completion of this module will enable you to:

• discuss adult learning theories
• explain how adult leaning theories can be used in clinical teaching
• identify a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to the goals and context of a teaching session
• demonstrate an understanding of the factors that affect learning in various contexts and modify teaching strategies accordingly
• conduct a learning needs analysis
• design a teaching resource or session based upon a needs analysis
• evaluate the effectiveness of teaching resources or sessions
• examine the issue of teaching and learning in terms of nurses'/midwives' responsibilities for ongoing professional education of themselves and others

Module 3 - Mentoring, preceptoring and clinical supervision

Successful completion of this module will enable you to:

• define the roles and discuss the characteristics of effective mentors and preceptors
• identify the purpose of mentoring, preceptoring and clinical supervision
• demonstrate understanding of the principles and practice of effective clinical supervision
• demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities of both parties in a clinical supervision relationship

Requisite

Students must have successfully completed HUBS1416, HUBS1406 and NURS1101 and be active in either the Bachelor of Nursing 11725 or the Bachelor of Midwifery 12200 programs.
