Description

This course focuses on development of performance and analytical skills in the funk idiom though a study of style, techniques, performance and accompaniment skills and improvisation techniques. Students will develop an understanding of theory, performance and musical direction/arrangement appropriate to the style.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Recognise and accurately perform different funk and fusion music styles to a high level

2. Read and interpret moderately complex song scores and perform from them appropriately on their individual instrument

3. Collaborate with other musicians to organise, present and lead performances at an intermediate level.

4. Improvise over harmonic patterns, correctly applying appropriate scales, modes and riffs

5. Demonstrate intermediate level control over tone and sound production and developing skill in stage presentation

6. Demonstrate knowledge of artists¿ background and contributions to their art forms through well-organised research and written and verbal presentation


Content

The course covers performance, improvisation, and accompaniment techniques studied through an exploration of various idioms and sub-genres of funk. Improvisation, rhythmic accuracy, groove and ensemble performance styles will be the major foci of this course.

Presentation: Presentation - 40%

Written Assignment: Written Assignment and Presentation - 20%

Performance: Performance - 40%
