On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Describe methodological, practical and ethical considerations in conducting treatment outcome evaluation in clinical settings
2. Describe cognitive-behavioural assessment of nicotine, alcohol and other drug problems
3. Identify which screening/assessment instruments are relevant to detect alcohol and other drug problems
4. Demonstrate competence in administering an alcohol and other drug assessment (AATOM, or BTOM)
5. Demonstrate competence in conducting a CBT assessment interview (see Reading 1.2) and administering the AUDIT (see Reading 5.1, p.35)
6. Demonstrate competence in written case formulations from vignettes.

Students must work in an employment setting which allows approximately 7 days of clinical work with clients who report alcohol or other drug use. (Please note that this is not a placement and that appropriate work settings also include accident and emergency, ward, community nursing and mental health services.) Mentoring will be required for a minimum of 2 meetings across the semester. If you are currently unemployed, you will need to meet with your mentor regularly so that you can practise the skills required for this course
