Description

This course is a starting point for you to learn Australian Sign language (Auslan). You will become aware of the deaf and hard of hearing community and its culture. No prior knowledge of Auslan or contact with deaf people is assumed. You will learn fingerspelling and signs, and by the completion of the course you will be able to participate in short dialogues. You will also investigate elements of Auslan linguistics and explore issues related to Deaf culture, community and history.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Identify and describe issues affecting Australian Deaf Community, Culture and history.

2. Identify and apply appropriate linguistic elements of Auslan.

3. Recognise and respond effectively to Auslan vocabulary and grammatical constructions in simple everyday situations.

4. Produce and deliver a range of accurate Auslan vocabulary and grammatical constructions in simple everyday situations.


Content

The course will provide an introduction to the study and acquisition of Auslan through a mix of theory and practical components. Topics covered will include:

  • Elements of Auslan
  • Communication strategies
  • Models in Deaf education
  • Auslan grammar
  • Indigenous Sign Languages
  • History of Auslan
  • Deaf culture
  • Deaf sport

Requisite

This course replaces LING2070. If you have successfully completed LING2070 you cannot enrol in this course.
