Description

This course is intended to develop the skillsets required for effective oral and written communication in the multitude of settings encountered by a biomedical scientist.

This course replaces the following course(s): HUBS3204 and HUBS3410. Students who have successfully completed HUBS3204 or HUBS3410 are not eligible to enrol in HUBS2410.


Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Understand the elements that are important for effective oral communication for different audiences.

2. Understand the process of writing to communicate the results of scientific research and identify the features that make a "good" or a "bad" piece of scientific writing.

3. Write an effective, engaging and persuasive first page of a grant, business proposal or press release.


Content

1. Interpreting and critically reviewing scientific information in both oral and written form.

2. Oral and written communication of scientific content to a range of audiences and in a range of contexts.

3. Accurate, rational and persuasive communication- constructing and presenting an argument which can inform and/or influence an audience.
