Description

The course consists of a series of lectures and laboratories on the functional anatomy of the nervous system, thorax, abdomen and pelvis. Areas emphasised are those most important in Medical Radiation Science, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Describe the structure of the major organs in the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis (Gross Anatomy).

2. Describe the relationship to other organs and its surface anatomy.

3. Describe the blood supply, venous and lymphatic drainage.

4. Understand how the organ's structure relates to its function, i.e. its physiology.


Content

  1. Introduction to the nervous system and the relevant anatomy of the skull and vertebral column
  2. Surface features, meninges, vasculature and ventricular system of the brain
  3. Cerebral cortex, and deep nuclei of the brain
  4. Brainstem and cranial nerves
  5. Cerebellum
  6. Spinal cord organisation and motor and sensory pathways, including pain pathways
  7. Autonomic nervous system
  8. Chest wall, breathing mechanics and mediastinal divisions
  9. Heart structure, including pericardium, blood supply and conducting system
  10. Pleural cavities and the lungs, including pulmonary circulation
  11. Lung lobes and bronchopulmonary segments
  12. Neck and upper respiratory tract (pharynx, larynx and sinuses)
  13. Structure, surface anatomy and imaging of major organs of the abdomen
  14. Blood supply, innervation, venous and lymphatic drainage of the gut
  15. Structure, surface anatomy of the kidney and urinary system
  16. Blood supply, innervation, venous and lymphatic drainage of the urinary system
  17. Pelvic contents and perineum
