Description
Through exploration of a number of contemporary issues in education and beyond, this course aims to challenge students’ thinking and to develop the critical reasoning and written and oral language skills required for study at an undergraduate level and in teaching practice.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Analyse, evaluate, and synthesise ideas as represented in academic and non-academic texts.
2. Demonstrate the academic skills of close analysis, critical reading and note taking.
3. Generate independent research.
4. Construct an argument in written and oral form.
5. Understand academic integrity and apply academic referencing skills.
6. Reflect knowledgably and critically on their own and others’ experiences in education.
Content
- Academic writing skills including essay planning and writing
- Academic integrity and the process of referencing
- Critical reading aimed at developing student capacity for deeper understanding of a variety of texts, with graded introduction to academic text types
- Research skills and effective use of evidence from academic sources
- Oral presentation skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Exploration of a range of contemporary issues in education, including social inclusion and exclusion in education contexts
