Description

This preparation course will be valuable to students entering Medical Radiation Science, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Human Nutrition, Speech Pathology, Health and Physical Education, Podiatry, Oral Health, Biomedical Science and Physiotherapy who have limited prior studies in biology or who feel that their knowledge in these areas is not sufficient.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Explain why knowledge of anatomy and physiology is important.

2. Explain why we use specific terminology.

3. Describe the use of prefixes, roots and suffixes.

4. Define eponyms, acronyms and abbreviations.

5. Discuss the anatomical position and sectional planes.

6. Describe the structural organisation of the human body.

7. Discuss the human body's four types of macromolecules.

8. Define the four types of tissue and 11 organ systems in the body.

9. Define the monomers and construction methods of the four main molecules found in the human body.

10. Describe the key structures and functions of the cardiovascular, respiratory and renal systems.

11. Describe the key structures and functions of the skeletal, muscular, and digestive systems.

12. Explain the structure of DNA.


Content

The course will focus on:

  1.  advice on learning styles to help students adopt an effective learning strategy
  2.  terminology that students will encounter, including prefixes, roots and suffixes
  3.  key anatomical descriptors and basic units of measurement
  4.  cell and tissue organisation, tissue types and basic molecular structure
  5.  organ systems: how different organs and tissues work together
  6.  basic chemistry and atomic structure, bond formation
  7.  macromolecules: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids and how they relate to human structure and physiology

Requisite

This course is only available to domestic students enrolled in NUPrep Bridging and Refresher [22223].
